Grid connection and network works at high and medium voltage
We follow the connection path from the first checks through to the STMD, designing user works, substations and cable ducts in coordination with the grid operator.
What the assignment covers
- Preliminary analysis and connection request.
- Review of the STMG: connection point, voltage, planned works and shared arrangements.
- Design of the user works and support on the network works.
- Substations at HV/MV, single-line diagrams and electromechanical layouts.
- Technical clearance and the documentation required for the STMD.
- Preliminary cost estimate for the connection works.
Frequently asked questions
Can you handle the entire grid connection process?
We can support the client through the various technical stages: preliminary analysis, connection request, assessment of the operator's estimate, design of the works, technical clearance, permitting, STMD and the documentation needed to build the connection. The Terna procedure runs as a sequence from the connection request through to the contract, the construction of the works and entry into service.
Which plants have to go through Terna?
According to the Terna portal, connection requests for plants with a capacity above 10 MW must be addressed to the operator of the national transmission grid. The competent operator should in any case be verified against the specific characteristics of the project and of the grid concerned.
Can you analyse an STMG before it is accepted?
Yes. We can check the connection point, voltage, planned works, shared arrangements, the substations involved, the length of the connections, possible interference, design risks and the preliminary impact on costs.
We have already accepted the STMG: can you take over the later stages?
Yes. We can start from the documentation already available and support the design of the user works, technical clearance, permitting deliverables, the technical interface with the operator and the activities needed to reach the STMD.
Can you prepare the documentation for the STMD?
Yes. We can support the preparation and coordination of the technical documentation required. In the Terna process, the STMD request follows registration of the positive outcome of the permitting process, as well as the upload of documents and the payments due.
Do you design both the user works and the network works?
We can design the user works for the connection and support, within the limits of the assignment and the competences required by the operator, the technical development of the network works. The scope is defined precisely before the assignment starts.
Do you work on substations at HV and MV?
Yes. CaltaTech works on the design of substations, single-line diagrams, electromechanical layouts, civil works, auxiliary systems, earthing systems, cable ducts and interfaces with the generation or storage plants.
Can you estimate connection costs before acquiring a project?
We can prepare a preliminary estimate of the main user works based on the connection solution, the route, the voltage, the substation and the information available. The estimate should be progressively updated as the design advances.
How long does it take to obtain and build a connection?
There is no single timescale valid for every project. The programme depends on the operator's activities, the permitting process, the complexity of the works, any shared arrangements and the availability of the land. The Terna procedure sets deadlines for some individual stages, but these do not necessarily match the overall duration of the project.
Do you have a project in development or a connection to verify?
Tell us where the permitting process stands and which voltage level you are connecting to.
